PodBreakout -- Recommended
This product saved my life. I'm trying to design an accessory for the iPod, and all connectors for production units must be purchased from a single source in asia. I have yet to find dimensioned mechanical drawings for these connectors, and Apple documentation recommends purchasing one of every connector type for evaluation, but with a 20-piece minimum and a $35 shipping adder for every line item (in addition to the $50 handling fee and $40 wire transfer fee since they don't take credit cards), it gets expensive real fast!
The PodGizmo came to the rescue and allowed me to prototype my iPod accessory without first having to determine which "legitimate" connector would ultimately be used.
A couple things kept me from giving it the highest rating. First, the pinout on the silk-screen of the PodBreakout is reversed relative to Apple documentation. Second, the pin-to-pin spacing is ever-so-slightly less than 1/10". You can use a 15-pin, 1/10" single row header for each of the two PodBreakout rows, but the pin pitch is off just slightly. The header can be forced to fit, but the whole assembly ends up bowed slightly. Furthermore, the two rows are more than 1/10" apart, so you can't use a 2x15 header, you have to use two 1x15. I imagine they assume you'll solder wires directly to the holes.
Hey guys, redo the product with 1/10" spacing, and silkscreen the pin numbers correctly this time! Love the product, but really, it's almost perfect, why not go for a perfect score?
